Sayuni Wickramasinghe’s work captures the overwhelming yet familiar modern experience of arriving in New York City on a cold, winter’s morning in December. This painting immerses viewers in a still of people flooding the platform at Penn Station - a scene repeated daily by millions of people. The sense of disconnect within the crowd is a product of modern day influences - namely the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened technology use - evidenced by the multiple figures staring downward or sealed off behind earphones. The piece speaks to the fragmented yet shared condition of contemporary existence: individuals bound by the same city and hour, yet each absorbed into their own worlds.

Artworks currently on exhibition can be collected from the gallery at 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne VIC 3000 once the exhibition has concluded. Collection is available during gallery hours: Tuesday to Friday, 12–7pm, and Saturday, 12–4pm.
