Joseph Tullmann is an American artist living and working in Melbourne. His work combines traditional and digital collage elements to create dream-like visions of an alternate reality. Art-historical elements are ripped from their sources and remixed into an amalgam of the present and the past. The result are images that appear neither painterly nor photographic, traditional nor contemporary, realistic nor fantastic. Inspired by visions, dreams, and hallucinations, his works occupy the strange space between different modes of seeing.
In his series "Euphoria Chronicle", the artist presents a series of tantalizing and surreal rooms: glowing crystals float above tiled or flowered floors. Distant landscapes beckon temptingly through a doorway. Hidden suns cast strange shadows in the rooms' narrow confines. A sense of mystery abounds, but also curiosity. The shallow architecture presents the crystals as treasures, waiting to be picked up: there is just enough room for the viewer to enter these liminal spaces.
The rooms and crystals are digital collages composed of elements from a variety of sources, reflecting the hyper-abundance and diversity of imagery in modern life. 15th century Italian painting, 19th century Japanese ukiyo-e printmaking, and 20th century video games are combined to create an unmistakably contemporary scene.
