Katya Ryzhikh is an emerging Russian Australian watercolour artist working in Melbourne/Naarm. She graduated from the Bachelor of Fine Art program at RMIT and completed a global exchange experience at University of the Arts London in 2024. In her work, she explores the relationship between film and television and the construction of identity. Utilising collage through her signature ‘pixel’ style, she poses the question: does media mirror identity, or inform it?
'I wanted to tell you, I love you' explores Ryzhikh's growing relationship with her mother in comparison to the coming of age movie, 'Lady Bird.' Similarly to the protagonist's story in the film, Ryzhikh and her mother had a complicated relationship through her adolescence, with the painting vulnerably celebrating how far they have come in understanding one other in adulthood.
