In historical systems of measurement, the “hand” was used as a unit for measuring a horse’s height - a scale derived from human anatomy. A horse’s height was measured through the span of male hands, a system that implicitly carried a male-centered perspective. This method of measurement was a form of quantification and classification shaped by masculine power structures.
Having never seen a real horse in person, my own impression of its scale and image was instead formed by countless flickering and indistinct illusions.
Twinkle attempts to subvert this inherited logic of measurement by weaving together hands considered “non-normative” with symbols of childhood longing. Air itself becomes the medium that sustains the horse’s form: a fluid, expansive self-representation viewed through a queer looking glass.

Artworks currently on exhibition can be collected from the gallery at 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne VIC 3000 once the exhibition has concluded. Collection is available during gallery hours: Tuesday to Friday, 12–7pm, and Saturday, 12–4pm.
